History
Jardine Lloyd Thompson (JLT) Asia, a member of the Jardine Matheson Group of companies, has a long and distinguished business heritage in Asia dating back to 1836. This section traces back our history to the formation of two British insurance broking groups, Jardine Insurance Brokers (JIB) Group plc and Lloyd Thompson Group plc, which merged in 1997 to form JLT Group.
- 1970
The foundations of Jardine Insurance Brokers (JIB) were laid in the early 1970s. Over the next few years, the business grew rapidly as a result of acquisitions and organic growth covering wholesale, retail and reinsurance broking.
- 1981
Lloyd Thompson was founded in 1981 and listed on the London Stock Exchange in October 1987. From its origins as a specialist marine hull and energy broker, Lloyd Thompson grew rapidly into all classes of wholesale and reinsurance business. It also developed a strong London market presence.
- 1991
Jardine Insurance Brokers was floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1991. It had a strong presence in the Asia Pacific region and was also represented in Continental Europe and the Americas.
- 1997
The Jardine Lloyd Thompson (JLT) Group was formed in February 1997 through the merger of Jardine Insurance Brokers and Lloyd Thompson Group. The merger combined Lloyd Thompson’s specialist skills and the JIB international network, particularly in Asia, making the JLT Group the fifth largest insurance broker in the world. Following the merger, JLT Asia was set up to head the group's business in Asia. Since February 1997, the Group has continued to grow, organically and through selective acquisitions.
- 1999
In 1999 the Group was reorganised into two business groups - JLT Risk Solutions and JLT Corporate Risks & Services.
- 2000
JLT Risk Solutions Asia was launched in November 2000, integrating JLT's leading Asian Reinsurance business (formerly Jardine Thompson Graham) with its highly successful regional businesses. The new division, aligned with regional specialist businesses, is aimed at providing products and services that utilise modern risk transfer techniques.
